Like so many trends, it started in London - but now florists all over the country are buying into the upmarket touch of personalised ribbons to adorn their wrappings.
The top quality ribbons from Mistral Management come in a range of widths and finishes - from woven cotton to printed satin right up to luxurious, semi-transparent mousseline - and at around £600 for a minimum order, this is a serious investment.
But over 90 UK florists are now using the ribbon - and some are so impressed they have lashed out on multiple colours to complement different designs.
Nobody has been more suprised by the success with florists than Mistral's Mervyn Allen, who launched the French-made ribbons in the UK expecting to sell mainly to department stores, fashion houses and upmarket food outlets. Early orders from well-known London florists like Kenneth Turner and Paula Pryke have led to increasing florist demand from all over the country.
Now florists all over the country are buying into the upmarket touch of personalised ribbon to adorn their wrapping.
Carl Banks of Darlington who has invested in two colours of ribbon (green on cream and cream on green) says he loves the product as it is much more stylish than the raffia he used to use. "It was a lot of money to lay out in one go, but I decided it was a good way to distinguish the shop in a very competitive area".
As Caroline Pecorelli at Fleurs in Horsham pointed out: "It's not just the big guys who can offer classy touches like this - it's something the small independent florist can do just as well, and it sets you apart."
Caroline has gone for two colours of ribbon - green and white and purple and white. "I'd like to have loads more colours because it really does enhance your presentation," she says.
Another enthusiastic new user is Paula Dunn of Paula's Flowers in Wednesfield, West Midlands. After only a couple of months, her verdict is that it's a "brilliant" way of advertising her shops in a subtle, classy way. For that reason, she puts it on corporate work and, in fact, any order which is likely to be seen by more than one person.
